What does a breast lift involve?

If you’re not happy about the size or shape of your breasts, there are two main plastic surgery options available to you. You can have breast enlargement surgery, also known as breast augmentation, or you can have a breast lift. Sometimes breast augmentation is carried out at the same time as a breast lift, though the right approach depends on your anatomy and the results you would like to achieve.

Breast enlargement is one of the most common procedures carried out in the UK and many patients who want to improve the appearance of their breasts automatically think that this is their best option. While this is the case in many instances, it’s certainly not always so. A breast uplift may enable you to improve the contour of your upper body by making the most of what you already have, without the need for implants.

What is a breast uplift?

Breast uplift surgery, also known as mastopexy, is a good solution for sagging breasts. It’s particularly helpful to people whose breasts have changed as a result of pregnancy, breast feeding and weight loss. The main aim is to restore the volume and shape of breasts and improve the outline so that you feel more confident in the way you look.

What’s involved in breast lift surgery?

If you are considering having a breast uplift procedure, the first step is to book an initial consultation to enable us to assess your body and discuss the results that could be achieved. We will talk you through what’s involved in breast uplift procedure and answer any questions you may have so that you can make an informed decision about whether surgery is right for you.

What happens during a breast uplift procedure depends on the size and shape of your breasts. Usually, though, we will create an anchor-shaped incision underneath the breast, or an incision around the nipple, extending to the groove beneath. Excess skin is then removed and the nipple and areola repositioned. Some patients with smaller breasts and minimal sagging may be able to have a modified procedure involving fewer incisions.

Is a breast lift right for you?

There are a couple of things you need to consider before having a breast lift procedure. Firstly, a breast lift provides longer-lasting results to women with smaller breasts and minimal sagging. Also, it may be best to put off having a breast lift until you have completed your family as pregnancy is likely to stretch your breasts again and alter the results achieved through surgery.

The best way to determine whether a breast lift is right for you is to make an appointment for a detailed discussion with our plastic surgeons who will be happy to talk to you about the options available to you.
